On the Second Sunday in May each year, St Margaret’s East Wellow is full of people who come from far and wide to honour Florence Nightingale, often called the Founder of Modern Nursing.

St Margaret’s is proud to be the Burial Place of Florence Nightingale. We gather to remember the Crimean War, what Florence Nightingale did and what she wrote, and to remind ourselves of the lessons that her legacy leaves for best practice today.

After the Service in church (which starts every time at 10.30am), the Choir leads the procession outside to the Burial Place, where a wreath is laid, Sunday School children lay posies, and our worship concludes with prayers. At 12.15, there is a lunch in the Village Hall (only available by prior booking).

One of the great things about the way in which “Nightingale Sunday” has developed as an event is the return of so many people year after year. It’s becoming a reunion for nurses, especially for Nightingale Nurses. We are also honoured by the presence of local Councillors and Mayors, and many nursing dignitaries.

For the Centenary Service (May 2010), we anticipate that presence at the Service will be by ticket only (that, sadly, being the only way we can imagine to regulate too many people wanting to come to a small building). But for 2007 through 2009 anyone can come to the service (if you can find a seat). If you want to book a seat for the lunch (and are not yet on our mailing list), please send an email to me (george.biggs@btconnect.com) and I will make sure the Ann Jarrett, our event organiser, will contact you with the details in plenty of time.
