St Margaret's East Wellow Church Life

From a Christian congregation’s point of view, a building is often important. Ours is. But buildings are places that you love, and places that you put up with. In our mediaeval building, we have uncomfortable pews, a single cold water tap with unreliable supply, and no toilet (toilets in the Church Rooms a couple of hundred yards away). We put up with those deficiencies because the building is a gem of its kind, a place in which prayer has been hallowed.

Much more significant is the congregation that the building is home to. People sometimes say to me. in surprise, “Do you still have regular services?” and the answer to that is “Yes, two or three every Sunday” with weddings, baptisms and midweek occasions as well. We have a link to The Florence Nightingale Museum, but that’s not us. We are a living and lively Church community with a Nightingale connection.

Thousands of people visit the grave site every year and make no contact with the congregation that looks after the site. Some from the United States and even further afield do drop in on a Sunday morning. A warm welcome will await you if you dare come!

We are a gathering of local Christians, Anglican, members of the Church of England, aged from birth into the 80s, almost entirely from Wellow and the surrounding area. We’re part of a Benefice with our nearest neighbour, St Leonard’s Sherfield English, and we’re part of Churches in Wellow & Sherfield ( the two mentioned, plus West Wellow Methodist Church, Canada Common Methodist Church, Wellow Wood Methodist Church, the Gospel Hall in Canada Road, and the Elim Pentecostal Wellow Christian Centre).

You can find details of our regular services on the site, and our children are particularly well served. If you enjoy singing, the Choir will welcome another member.
