Congratulations!

If you’re planning to get married in church, that’s great. I hope we can help. Between us here we have a lot of experience at enabling couples to make their Wedding Day special.

Can I get married in church? If neither of you has been married before(or entered into a legal partnership agreement) you may have a right to a church wedding.

So which church can I get married in? In English Law, you have to have a residential qualification to get married in a particular church. In practice, this means that at least one of you needs to live in Wellow now or, at least, that the family home of one of you must be in Wellow. You may then be married by Banns of Marriage.
If you no longer live here, but your family did once, and you had a connection to St. Margaret’s, you may be allowed to marry by Archbishop’s Licence. You may apply, but I can offer no guarantees.
Occasionally, people who are already worshippers in a church and are on the church’s Electoral Roll (qualified to take part in it’s government) but who both live elsewhere are allowed to get married at that church.

If one of us has been divorced, can I still get married in church? Perhaps. After the divorce of one party, neither of you has a ‘right’ to be married in church. It will be up to the local church to decide if it would be happy to celebrate your wedding there. Ask about the process.

So, if you think you qualify to get married at St. Margaret’s, what you need to do next is to think about when you want to get married, and then to ring the Vicar, George Biggs on 01794 323562 to talk through the possibilities. If it seems right to the three of us, you would fill in an application form to book a date and time. That becomes a contract that we will honour.

So what’s the process leading up to our Wedding Day? In the last three to four months before the Day, we will meet probably three times in preparation, helping you to understand the choices you may make and exactly what you will be doing and, eventually to run through parts of the ceremony in a rehearsal in church.

What does it all cost? As a rough guide, there are legal fees (set by Parliament). in 2007 they come to £259. In addition, you may want various people to help. At present, you would pay £45 to employ the organist, £50 for the Choir and £9 for the bell ringers (and that’s only possible when there are Choir members to ring!). Most people want flowers. We have excellent teams of arrangers who give their service free to you, so it will only be the cost of the flowers themselves.

Anyway, if you’ve got plans, please ring 01794 323562 and we’ll see what we can do.
