School visits usually last an hour and a half

Key Stage 1

A visit consists of watching the children’s version of the film ‘ Florence Nightingale – a remarkable woman.’ The film tells the story, simply, of Florence’s early life in East Wellow, her rejection of the traditional Victorian expectations for a daughter of wealthy parents, her experiences in the Crimean War, many years dedication to improving care of the sick and her

resting place in our churchyard. The summary at the end of the film matches the objectives (how do we find out about the past) of the National Curriculum, by re-using images from the film and several new sequences. The film lasts 20 minutes.

The activities are delivered to a class of (Y2) children divided into 3 groups and experiencing 3 different types of activity in a ‘round robin’ format, each activity takes 20 minutes.

Example:

  • Group 1 – led by our staff, role play and compare some aspects of the nurses and the soldiers’ lives, then and now, through children dressing up in replica costumes and using artefacts to promote discussion. Photos can be taken for display in school.
  • Group 2 - led by our staff, use their observational skills, knowledge and understanding of pattern and materials by following a picture trail set in the churchyard and recording it for discussion in school.
  • Group 3 – led by an adult from the school, make a drawing of the gravestone, inspired by the children in the film.

We would like a few examples of any general work about the visit to us, either written or artwork, for our display.

A junior school party will watch the film. The workshops will be led by our staff in 2 groups lasting half an hour each.

The workshops can be designed to fit in with the school’s preferences –

  • the effects of poor diet and hygiene on the health and survival of the soldiers in the Crimean War
  • an aspect of ‘The Victorians’ – costume, public health, social divisions, transport, education, which are prompted in the film.
  • using the film to explore the different genres of writing.

A draft copy of work will be available to refine at school and any finished examples will be greatly appreciated for our display in the church.
